Sea Of Shadows
SEA OF SHADOWS (Austria)
Austria, 104 minutes
Directors: Richard Ladkani
Previous film festivals: Sundance (Audience Award – World Cinema Documentary)

The vaquita, the world's smallest whale, is near extinction, as its habitat is destroyed by Mexican drug cartels and the Chinese mafia seeking to harvest the swim bladder of the totoaba fish - - the so-called "cocaine of the sea." This urgent documentary tells the story of the efforts of environmental activists, the Mexican navy, and undercover investigators, who are fighting back against this illegal and environmentally-destructive multi-million dollar business.

What we think: Is it an environmental documentary? is it a thriller? This film is fascinating in any way.

Follow four champion groomers and their wildly colorful dogs through a year in the visually stunning and humorous world of competitive, creative dog grooming. This playful documentary reveals that, no matter what the subject or medium, an innate passion for creative expression is universal.

What we think: Dogs as a canvas, and their groomers as painters. A funny documentary about the relationships between women and their dogs as grandiose works of art.

In the 1980s, Den Harrow (a/k/a Stefano Zandri) dominated the European pop charts with hits like “Future Brain,” “Bad Boy,” and “Don’t Break My Heart.” Thirty years later, an American photographer, Thomas Barbèy, makes a startling revelation: he was “the secret voice” behind the project and Italian Stefano Zandri has allegedly been lip-syncing for decades. In this hilarious, true-life Faustian drama, a 30-year-old secret between two middle-aged men ignites the most conceptual music rivalry of all time. Who is the “true” artist behind Den Harrow: the face or the voice?

What we think: You might call this lightheaded music Euro Trash, but behind the scenes of there is in a real tensed debate about art, creation, marketing, and popular culture.

Sudan is the last male northern white rhino in existence, and this film explores the painful emptiness of potential species extinction, through the eyes of Sudan's three primary caregivers. Teetering on borrowed time and with his health in decline, Sudan's looming death and the uncertainty of employment that it will bring hangs over the heads of our three dynamic characters. Their only hope to save the species they love - and perhaps their livelihoods - rests fully upon the success of a last resort in vitro fertilization (IVF) experiment.

What we think: a touchy love story between humans and animals which encapsulates not only an intimate relationship but also a desperate struggle for the survival of the whole species.

THE MUNDO KING
USA, 64 minutes
DirectorMichael DeMinico

In 1993, at the age of 51, Rolf Schultz moved to the Dominican Republic from Hamburg to build a castle. Through extraordinary art, architecture, and showmanship, this eccentric German man weaves fantastic tales of attracting alien spaceships to Earth. Visitors to his home - Castillo Mundo King - are wowed by its towering, Gaudi-esque design and alien adornments. And, they most likely leave questioning whether Rolf has truly encountered aliens or is simply the greatest showman this side of the Milky Way.

What we think: A deep look into the life of an adorable "weirdo" who built a temple to serve as the center of the universe, but really transcends into the core of his own turbulent inner world,

Danish director Mads Brügger and Swedish private investigator Göran Björkdahl are trying to solve the mysterious 1961 plane crash death of former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjöld. As their investigation closes in on the truth, they discover a Byzantine international criminal conspiracy lies at the heart of this shocking assassination.

What we think: A brilliant conspiracy theory unfolds in this investigative documentary that left some UN official shaken.
